As most know by now, over 200 hundred girls and young women were kidnapped last week in Nigeria by Islamic militants. Their crime? They had the audacity to desire an education, and they were kidnapped while taking exams at their school. As of now, no one is sure of their whereabouts and their safe return is in grave doubt, especially given the inept response of the Nigerian government and it’s police and armed forces to this crisis. In the past year Nigeria has enacted draconian laws against homosexuals and those who are willing to publicly state their support for equal rights for all regardless of sexual orientation. Perhaps if the government of Nigeria spent less time worrying about imaginary threats to its young people from homosexuals, and more time worrying about real threats to its young people from (presumably heterosexual) terrorists, this terrible tragedy could have been averted.
